In 2021, the establishment of the Northern Cape Solar Business Incubator (NOCSOBI) found expression with a pilot project for Frances Baard taking off. A call for Expression of Interest (EoI) unfolded aimed at building a database of active HDI within the renewable energy space within the district.
The groundwork undertaken in 2021 solidified itself with the establishment of NOCSOBI’s headquarters in Old Main Street in the Kimberley CBD in June 2022. Also, a string of SMMEs (small, medium, micro enterprises)/Cooperatives participated in the first-ever weeklong capacity building workshop which focused on:
- Reflections on South Africa’s and Northern Cape’s renewable energy landscape and providing an overview on the Rooftop Solar Programme;
- Taking stock of the weaknesses and strength of SMMEs/Cooperatives attending workshops; and
- Providing insights in harnessing entrepreneurial development and sector competitiveness.
Of utmost importance too for this year, is that efforts are being undertaken in extending what had been achieved in Frances Baard to the other four (4) districts, viz.; John Taolo Gaetsewe, ZF Mgcawu, Namakwa and Pixley Ka Seme districts. The immediate plan is to build a database of HDI entrepreneurs in the four districts as done in Frances Baard.
We also sought that they be registered with the CIPC;
- Business entity should be located within the four districts mentioned;
- The following minimum requirements were compulsory – 1. Only companies with qualified electricians will be considered and 2. Preference will be given to previously disadvantaged individuals.
“NOCSOBI has transformed our approach to business. The support and resources provided have been invaluable in helping us navigate the solar market effectively,” said one participant, highlighting the incubator’s impact on their journey.
